Staying Safe While Spray Foaming Your Home
Spray foam insulation is some powerful stuff. The fumes and chemicals involved mean you need to take the proper health and safety precautions. Don’t worry – we’ll outline everything you need to know to spray foam safely.
Suits Up With PPE
Before spraying, suit up from head to toe in personal protective equipment (PPE):
- Respirator mask or fresh air system – essential for filtering chemical fumes
- Goggles or face shield – prevent irritation from overspray
- Chemical-resistant gloves and coveralls – reduce exposure to skin
Proper PPE is crucial when spraying foam or doing any finishing work afterward. Don’t skimp on safety!
Ventilate the Space
While spraying and as the foam cures, thorough ventilation is a must.
Crack open windows and doors and use exhaust fans to circulate fresh air. The fumes can be strong, so keep the area well ventilated.
If possible, avoid being in the house entirely while spraying and for at least 24 hours after to allow gases to dissipate.
Monitor Your Health
Be mindful of any lightheadedness, breathing issues, headaches, or skin/eye irritation. This may indicate sensitivity to the spray chemicals.
If you have respiratory issues like asthma, it’s best to call in pros rather than DIY. Don’t take chances with your health.
Clean Up Spills ASAP
If any wet foam spills or overspray occurs, clean it up right away before it cures. Use protective gear while cleaning.
Promptly dispose of any waste following local hazardous material regulations. Never dump foam down drains.
Play It Safe
It’s crucial to follow all instructions for your spray foam kit and use the proper safety gear. If at any point you feel unwell or unsure, it’s best to pause the project and get some fresh air.
